Fourth Norfolk Cambridge Society Lecture to Take Place

16 May 2019

The fourth Norfolk Cambridge Society Lecture will take place on Tuesday 11th June 2019 at 6.40pm (registration from 6.00pm) in the Blake Studio, Norwich School. The lecture will be given by Cathie Carmichael, Professor of European History at the University of East Anglia on the subject of "Reflections on the Causes and Consequences of Genocide - Lessons from the Balkans and Elsewhere".

Cathie is one of the world's leading authorities on ethnic cleansing and genocide and is joint editor of the Routledge History of Genocide. She has authored several other authoritative books on the subject, including Genocide Before the Holocaust (Yale University Press), A Concise History of Bosnia (Cambridge University Press) and Ethnic Cleansing in the Balkans: Nationalism and the Destruction of Tradition (Routledge). She also co-authored Language and Nationalism in Europe (Oxford University Press) with Stephen Barbour.

In her lecture, Cathie will be exploring the tribal attitudes and values that invite exploitation by those in power, the ease with which these can transform from dislike to hatred, and the devastating consequences of ethnic cleansing and genocide on the societies that experience it. She will also be asking whether any countries in the modern world are entirely immune from the sort of attitudes and manipulation that can eventually lead to genocide. As usual, the event is not only open to Cambridge alumni but also to anyone with an interest in the subject matter. We hope, therefore, that you will come and listen to Professor Carmichael and invite friends and colleagues.

Tickets are priced at £15 per person. However, for people in full-time adult education, for senior citizens over 60 and for all tickets bought and paid for before Friday 24th May, the price will be reduced to £10 per person. There is also a strictly limited number priced at £5 available to sixth form students accompanied by parents or teachers. All prices include a glass of wine (not sixth form students) or a soft drink. To buy tickets, please email geoffreyjnsmart@gmail.com, stating the number you require of each category (£5, £10 and £15).

The Norfolk Cambridge Society Lectures are held four times a year, with the aim of celebrating the rigorous pursuit and dissemination of truth, bringing distinguished speakers to Norwich at regular intervals and making a significant contribution to the intellectual life of the county.

Please note that the first three lectures were heavily subscribed and most seats were sold several weeks in advance. You are therefore strongly advised to book early.
