Fifth Norfolk Cambridge Society Lecture to take place

30 July 2019

The fifth Norfolk Cambridge Society lecture will take place on Thursday 26th September in the Blake Studio at Norwich School.

The lecture will be given by Professor Andy Parker, Head of the Cavendish Laboratory and Professor of High Energy Physics at the University of Cambridge, on the subject of "Higgs Bosons, Black Holes and the Structure of Space: News from the Frontiers of Physics and the Large Hadron Collider".

Professor Parker will discuss the significance of the Higgs boson discovery and why it overturns millennia of human thought about the nature of matter. He will also describe some of his recent work looking for black holes in the data produced by the Large Hadron Collider, explaining why he regards such work as both safe and fascinating and how it could lead us to discover a universe with hidden dimensions and parallel worlds. Professor Parker was awarded the Pilkington Prize for excellence in teaching in 1997 and assures us that no understanding of equations will be required!

The lecture will begin at 6.30pm on Thursday 26th September in the Blake Studio. Tickets are priced at £15 per person. However, for people in full-time adult education, for senior citizens over 60 and for all tickets bought and paid for before Friday 23 August, the price will be reduced to £10 per person. As usual, a limited number of tickets priced at £5 will be available for sixth form students accompanied by parents or teachers. All prices include a glass of wine (not sixth form students) or a soft drink. To buy tickets, please email geoffreyjnsmart@gmail.com, stating the number you require of each category (£5, £10 and £15).

The Norfolk Cambridge Society Lectures are held four times a year, with the aim of bringing distinguished speakers to Norwich, celebrating the rigorous pursuit and dissemination of truth and making a significant contribution to the intellectual life of the county.

Please note that our lectures tend to be heavily subscribed and most seats are sold several weeks in advance. You are therefore strongly advised to book early.
