Distinguished Historian and ON Christopher Andrew to give Lecture at Norwich School

21 August 2018

Old Norvicensian, former Norwich School governor, and distinguished scholar Professor Christopher Andrew (ON 49-59), will be returning to Norwich School in October to give the inaugural lecture in a new quarterly lecture series from the Norfolk Cambridge Society.

Professor Andrew is an Emeritus Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Cambridge and will be speaking on the fascinating topic of “500 Years of Cambridge Spies – Lessons for the Modern World”.

Professor Andrew is undoubtedly Britain’s leading expert on intelligence and has published several ground-breaking books on the subject. In addition to his extensive writing achievements, Professor Andrew is also the official historian of MI5; chair of the Cambridge Intelligence Seminar; co-editor of Intelligence and National Security; a former visiting professor at Harvard, Toronto and Canberra; and a regular presenter of BBC Radio and TV documentaries.

After the lecture there will be time for questions and the opportunity to buy signed copies of Professor Andrew’s latest book, The Secret World: A History of Intelligence. The book charts the history of espionage from the first literary mention of spying (in the biblical book of Exodus) to sophisticated modern forms of intelligence and security. The Secret World is the most comprehensive history of intelligence ever published and includes detailed looks at global espionage in periods such as the ancient world, Elizabethan England, the French Revolution and the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

The lecture will take place on Thursday 4th October, from 6.30pm – 8.30pm in the Blake Studio at Norwich School. Tickets are priced at £15 per head and include a glass of wine after the talk. There is a special concessionary rate of £10 per ticket for all people in full-time adult education, for senior citizens over 60 and for all other tickets bought and paid for before Saturday 8th September. Tickets are expected to go fast so booking is essential – if you are interested, email Geoffrey Smart (geoffreyjnsmart@gmail.com) or visit the event page for more information.

Professor Andrew’s lecture is the first in a series of lectures this autumn hosted by the Norfolk Cambridge Society, aimed at bringing distinguished speakers to the city at regular intervals.
