Bishop's Palace Lawn Development

Bishop's Palace Lawn Development

Norwich School, together with its advisors, have worked closely with external agencies, including Norwich City Council and Historic England to develop a series of buildings and spaces that fulfil the growing needs of the school.

A detailed planning application for this development entitled the Bishop’s Palace Lawn Development was submitted on 18th March 2019 to Norwich City Council.

We are hugely proud of our plans, which come as the culmination of three years of preparation and urge you to inspect them and to support us. The link to the Council's planning portal is here.

The school held a public exhibition on Thursday 12th July 2018 to update the Norwich School community and general public on these plans and these new plans reflect the continued dialogue between all parties over the last nine months.

The application comprises the construction of a substantial new dining hall and kitchen block. The current refectory will still be in use during this time. Once this has been constructed, the application envisages the school’s current refectory will be demolished and a new classroom block constructed on its site. The buildings are intended to be visually arresting and the school has worked hard to ensure they will be sympathetic to their surrounds, reflecting the best of traditional and modern influences.

Completion of the complex will see the pedestrianizing and landscaping of the Bishop’s Palace Lawn site. The proposed development includes a discreet pedestrian service entrance within the precinct wall opening onto Palace Street, made by re-opening an existing gateway that has long been blocked up.

The submission is based on:

• An urgent need to improve the school’s facilities

• The opportunity to build upon the school’s community ‘outreach’ programme by providing a new, iconic, multi-use facility in the heart of the city

• The operational issues connected with the existing facilities

• The sensitivities of the school site and its multi-layered constraints

• Detailed design considerations taking on board feedback from interested parties and stakeholders

There will be upcoming opportunities to discuss the plans and to hear the school’s rationale at information events planned over coming weeks. Details will be published shortly.

We urge you to support our proposals, which we strongly feel will benefit both the school and the city of Norwich.

We anticipated a decision mid 2019 and will update you on progress in due course.
