The School’s Kayak Racing Group (KRG) was established in 2012 and focuses on the two racing disciplines of Sprint and Marathon Kayaking. The Senior School has a small but high calibre squad of girls and boys that is attracting new comers to an exciting, physical and tactical form of racing.
Training takes place year round based at Whitlingham Boathouse using the River Yare for interval, drill and long distance (up to 12km) training. K1 and K2 racing (single and two-person) boats are used in a partnership with Norwich Canoe Club, one of the foremost clubs in the country and current national champions in both sprint and marathon kayaking. This partnership extends the opportunities for training and competing and enables athletes to draw on a wider pool of coaching expertise.
Marathon and Sprint Events – The KRG has a number of events planned for the year, including:
- The Trent K2 Race (20Miles)
- Waterside A (13 miles)
- Waterside B (18 miles)
- Waterside C (26 miles)
- Waterside D (35 miles)
The Waterside Series takes place on the Kennet and Avon Canal in Wiltshire/Buckinghshire and provides Winter long distance racing and excellent preparation for Devises to Westminster Race (DWR) at Easter.
The DWR covers 125 miles of the Kennet and Avon Canal and River Thames and it is the KRG’s aim to enter one or two crews annually into this gruelling event. We encourage KRG members to also join Norwich Canoe Club to enable them to also race in the Hasler Series of regional and national marathon events.
The KRG members will also attend the national sprint regatta’s at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham to compete in the Olympic distance events of 200, 500 and 1000m. Elite members are selected to race for the school at the Sobreka Junior Development Regatta in Belgium in September, which provides experience of international competition for talented GB squad and development squad paddlers.
The KRG Head Coach is school tutor Ian Hayward, an experienced competitive and recreational paddler and Level 3 coach. He holds National Masters Champion titles in both sprint and marathon kayaking. The KRG also has access to Tim Scott and experienced Level 3 coach working with Norwich Canoe Club and the Canoe England’s Sprint World Class Programme.
Pupils from the school can access kayak racing through their games choices in both the Michaelmas and Trinity Term and no prior experience is necessary.
