Aims and Objectives

 

Principal Aim

It is the principal aim of the History department to encourage an interest and enthusiasm for past.

The department also seeks to develop the followingCurriculum Aims :

-         To promote the acquisition of knowledge and understanding of human activity in the past, linking it, as appropriate, with the present.

-         To ensure that pupils’ knowledge is rooted in an understanding of the nature and use of historical evidence.

-         To help pupils towards an understanding of the development over time of social, moral and cultural values.

-         To promote an understanding of the nature of cause and consequence, continuity and change, similarity and difference.

-         To develop essential study skills of research and analysis of information using a wide variety of sources and to construct logical argument, usually through the medium of writing.

-         To provide a sound basis for further study and the pursuit of personal interest.

-         To develop linguistic and grammatical skills and accuracy through a variety of media.

 

Objectives

Each student should gain a degree of familiarity with the past and feeling for its customs, cultures and developments, confidence in handling material in argument and analysis and the skills to express ideas in a coherent, individual manner relying on their own understanding. All students, of all abilities, should be helped to develop their subject specific and general skills.
