Independent Schools National Swimming Gala | Monday, 12 March 2012

Description: C:\Users\mbarber\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\0U5H9LRE\team photo.JPG

On Friday 9th March a team of 11 swimmers from Norwich School took part in the prestigious and long-running Bath and Otter Cup, also known as the Independent Schools National Gala, at Crystal Palace. Teams of boys and girls were entered for the freestyle relays in the morning and the medley relay in the afternoon. Despite missing a number of our better and more experienced swimmers the team put on a good show, acquitting themselves well against very well-drilled opposition.

The girls swam first in the freestyle race and finished in a creditable 37th place. Special thanks are due to the third leg swimmer, Hannah Marshall (M5B), who travelled down to London at late notice. The boys swam next. Despite a powerful first leg time of 56.47 seconds from Dom Waters (U6N) they failed to qualify for the Aldenham cup final by one place.

In the afternoon we opted to change personnel in order to allow everyone the invaluable experience of competing at such a famous venue. The girls again took to the pool first and competed well in the medley, posting a time of 2 minutes 40.76 seconds. The boys, with Mathew Webb (L5S) and Luke Sheard (U6N) replacing Joe and Will Cooper (both Coke), swam a controlled and committed race, finishing in a time of 2 minutes 05.62 seconds. Dom again recorded a very impressive time for his leg and this certainly helped secure us a place in the Dunhelm Cup, a competition for the smaller schools. After a nervy wait while the other competitions were completed, our team took to the pool and swam hard. Despite all acquitting themselves well we could not quite overhaul a couple of schools in front of us and ended the race in eighth.

Despite a long journey home the squad remained in good cheer and enjoyed their day. My thanks to Mr Bailey for his expert coaching and effective cajoling. Thanks also are due to our captain, Harriet Pring (U6S), for her help before and at the event.

Football result: NS 2nds vs RHS | Monday, 14 November 2011

3-2 win
Norwich School's 2nds continue their unbeaten run with a 3-2 win against RHS. A confident Norwich team went 3-0 up with an unstoppable strike from Matthew Mahatme, a cool finish from Michael Willgrass and a swinging corner from Eric Grunstein. A strong RHS managed to pull back two goals in the closing stages of the game, to take it to a close finish. However, Norwich managed to see off the late attached to gain the three points.

Six Norwich School athletes represented the Norfolk Schools Athletics Championships held at the UEA.

Sailing Team News | Tuesday, 14 June 2011

The school's Sailing Team had a notable victory against the ONs last Thursday (9th June) at Wroxham Broad. The ONs fielded a very experienced team but the schol squad of Charlie Talbot and Ollie Chapman, Will Jones and Tom James, Gabriel Wrenn and Poppy Woodcock came back ffrom a daunting 2-1 scoreline to secure an impressive 3-2 victory. The school team is therefore the current holder of the Mackintosh Cup.

Mr Bedford-Payne

Athletics | Thursday, 9 June 2011

Norwich School athletes have been in action in Bedford and at UEA during the past week. On Thursday, 9 fourth formers travelled to Bedford for the East Prep Schools championships. It was the first time in recent years that Norwich had sent a team to this event, and most of our team found the standard very high. However, two of our athletes rose to the challenge and won their events. Training partners Jonny Tomes and Daniel Bainbridge won the U14 and U13 javelin competitions, both throwing over 32 metres. These victories mean that Jonny and Daniel will now go to the National finals in Birmingham next month.

On Saturday, 14 Norwich School athletes competed at the Norfolk Schools Championships at UEA and we achieved a total of 4 wins and 2 second places. Both the runners up were in the discus - Jonny Tomes in the junior boys and India Gill in the junior girls. Oliver Cooley won the junior boys' triple jump with a leap of 11m36. James Steele won the junior boys' high jump with a clearance of 1m70. TJ Ighomeroho won a very close intermediate 100m in a time of 11:8, and Martainn Ramsay led from the front to win the senior 800m in 2:02. All six of these athletes will now go forward to the East Anglian Championships on Saturday 18th June, again at UEA.

Recent Athletics News | Tuesday, 24 May 2011

Norwich School athletes have been in action at UEA and Gresham’s over the past week. The senior boys team travelled to Holt on Saturday to take on RHS, Wymondham College and Gresham’s. Unfortunately the other schools beat us in the overall standings, but there were a number of good individual performances. Jonny Jones, Tristan Vince and Oliver Mirza were 2nd in the 800m, Shot and Hurdles respectively. There were new personal bests for Paddy Bartram (55.6) and David Rowlinson (56.9) in the 400m and David Cullum (23.9) in the 200m. Our one individual victory came in the 1500m from Martainn Ramsay. However, performance of the day came from James Steele. James, who is only in L5, came 3rd in the senior high jump with a new PB of 1m70.

Last Wednesday, a number of athletes from L4-U5 represented Norwich School at the City Sports at UEA. Here, pupils were competing against other schools from central Norwich for places at the County Championships, at UEA on Saturday 11th June. Winners from Norwich School were

Other cricket club results

U15A

Norwich 171 for 5 (William Fleming 46 )
Wymondham 163 for 5
Result: Won by 8 runs

The U14A’s swept to their 3 win out of 3 with a 46 run victory

In reply Wymondham  were bowled out for 129 with Johnny Singh taking 2 for 11 in his 6 overs.

U13A

Wymondham batted first and, despite a tricky slope, the bowlers stuck to their lines and created numerous wicket taking opportunities.  Unfortunately some below par fielding and catching allowed Wymondham to reach 123 all out 50 of which were scored by one batsman and there were 31 extras.  In reply we got off to a slowish start, but Elliott Wang injected some impetus scoring 30 in 26 balls, but once he'd been run out, we settled for the draw and ended on 108 for 7.  Draw.

U12A

Norwich 199 for 3 (Daniel Bainbridge 81 not out, Tom Harris 60)
Wymondham 87 all out (Alex Balalis- Stone 5 for 7 off 3 overs)

secured an emphatic victory against Langley at Beeston.  Asked to bat first we amassed a total of 227 for 2 in our 24 overs with Cameron McLaren unbeaten on 82, Blake Ingrams 47 not out and Yash Kulkarni 46.  Langley were clearly daunted by the prospect of scoring at nearly 10 an over and limped to a score of 48 for 7 after their 24 overs.  Win by the huge margin of 179 runs

Rowing report from the inter-regionals and from Chiswick Regatta | Wednesday, 4 May 2011

On the second Saturday of the Easter holidays, the J15 and J16 Coxed Fours travelled to Nottingham to represent the Eastern Region in the inter-regional regatta, held over 2000m at the national watersports centre.   The J15s dominated their heat, and were in contention in the final, finishing 3rd with bronze medals for Marcus Bell, Jon Whadcoat, Nick Siemons and Max Ovenden, coxed by Alex Turner.  The J16s came second in their heat, but produced an impressive surge in the last 500m of the final, coming from behind to secure third place.   Bronze medals also, therefore, for Tom Dell, Jacob Williams, Oscar Fear-Segal and Geo Rolls, coxed by David Strange.

On Saturday 30th April the J15 & J16 Bs, and the J14 As, travelled to Chiswick Regatta, held over 1000m of the River Thames between Chiswick and Kew Bridges.
The J14s had a bye into the semi-finals of the coxed quad competition. Unfortunately, they had a misfortune at the start, losing 1½ lengths almost immediately. They then kept pace with the other crew, but could not undo the damage, so were eliminated from the competition.
The J16B crew (Isaac Jermy, Felix Peckitt, Maurizio Carlino-Rackett and Jack Carroll, coxed by Chris Cockburn) had only rowed together once before, so they did well to lost only narrowly in their two races. They showed a lot of potential for the future.
The performance of the day was from the J15 Bs (Matt Wilde, Fraser Wilcox, Gautham Venu and James Medler, coxed by Alex Turner). Racing in the Men's Novice category, they rowed with excellent technique to beat much larger crews from Twickenham Rowing Club and Eastbourne College, before narrowly succumbing to an adult crew from the hosts, Quintin Boat Club, in the final. An excellent first regatta for them.

Matches gainst Gresham's
The Cricket Club got the season off to a flying start with a clean sweep of wins against Gresham's School. The 1st XI led the way with an emphatic 8 wicket win.
1st XI

We won the toss and elected to field first. Although Sam Plater took a wicket in the first over, Gresham's made steady progress throughout their innings. The bowlers toiled but could not find another breakthrough until 197 runs later when Sam Plater and Harry Bamber combined to complete a runout in the final over of the innings.
The most economical bowlers were Josh Chatland and Daniel Mortham, finishing with identical figures of 7-0-30-0 and the wicket taker Sam Plater 7-1-34-1.
Total: 201/2 from 35 overs.
Matthew Plater immediately set the tone for the chase as he hit the first two balls to the boundary. Sam and Matthew put on 76 for the first wicket before Sam was bowled by one of the few good balls of the day. This brought Will Bryan to the crease and, after playing himself in, he then hit the accelerator along with Matthew to take us to the brink of victory with a 119m partnership. Matthew got his hundred before being bowled. Callum White and Will Bryan finished things off in the 30th over to seal a very satisfying win.
Main scorers: Matthew Plater - 100 of 85 balls, Will Bryan - 76 not out off 65 balls.
Match result: Norwich School 1st XI won by 8 wickets with 5.2 overs to spare.
2nd XI

Gresham's batted second, scoring 110 all out (Joe Cooper 3 for 23, Max Grimmer 3 for 29, Jack Long-Martinez stunning runout that helped change the game)
Player of the match: Max grimmer
Result: Win by 13 runs

Wednesday 27th April
The U13 team played Town Close and, having been put into bat, struggledto cope with the slow, low pitch. We lost wickets regularly, often due to injudicious shot selection. Only George Nolan stayed in for any lenght of time, batting sensibly for 31 out of a total of 70 all out. Town Close also lost early wickets and were in trouble at 46 for 5 before a sensible partnership extinguished any hopes we may have had of vistory.
Yash Kulkarni was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3 for 12 in 5 overs.
Result: loss by 5 wickets.
