Emma Pooley (ON 2001) wins silver in Beijing

15 August 2008

Emma Pooley (Reproduced by kind permission of the Eastern Daily Press)Old Norvicensian Emma Pooley stunned the cycling world by gaining second place in the Olympic time trial. In a brilliant ride, she covered the hilly, 23.5 km course in just over 35 minutes and missed out on gold by only 24 seconds to Kristin Armstrong of the United States. When asked how she achieved this amazing result, Emma responded, “There’s no secret, you just have to make it hurt. Imagine a friend sitting on your wheel, shouting at you!”  Speaking to staff at Norwich School she added, “I can’t quite believe it, I’m sure I’ll wake up in 5 minutes and have to ride the whole thing again…”

While at Norwich School in the Sixth Form, Emma established a strong reputation as a runner and determined athlete – alongside a formidable academic career that took her to Cambridge University. Emma last visited Norwich School in the spring and plans to come back during October – to speak to pupils and to receive our congratulations for an outstanding achievement.
