Kate Greenaway Medal
This term two Lower 4 Art classes have been studying the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration. The students have looked closely at how an illustrator works with an author and publishing company in order to develop characters and plot. They have learnt about the complex process of developing a seemingly simple text and very basic characters.
At the beginning of the process, the pupils all wrote a poem that would potentially be the basis of the book. All of the poems were tested out on the target audience (3-7 year olds) and they chose their favourite. The final poem was then split with each student taking responsibility for one double page. We created a storyboard and tweaked the images taking into consideration continuity, plot and practical issues such as the book’s gutter (fold in the centre).
The final result is a fabulous piece of team work and all of the students involved should be very proud of themselves. Follow this link to see this touching work.
