Athletics Club
21 May 2012
A number of pupils represented City of Norwich Athletics Club at the County Championships.
Lorna Magrath came 3rd in a very competitive U17 800m, in which the top 3 all finished within a second.
Sophie Bishop got a silver medal in the U13 relay and 70m hurdles, but the highlight of her day was winning the long jump with a leap of 4m14cm. Sophie was also recently a member of the Norfolk team that came 2nd at the National Indoor Athletics finals in Birmingham.

However, the undoubted star of the day was Jonny Tomes, who came away with 3 gold medals, winning the U15 discus, javelin and hammer. Jonny has now been selected to represent Norfolk in all 3 events at the Inter-counties championships. The team coach can't recall anyone ever completing this hat-trick before. Jonny is now ranked in the top 30 in the country for all 3 of these events and has an excellent chance of making it to the English Schools Championships in July. The first step on this road is the City Sports Day, which takes place on Monday, May 28th.
The athletics squad competed at Gresham’s on Saturday 19th May. Lorna Magrath and India Gill had a successful day in the girls’ competition: Lorna, still only in M5, won the senior 800m by nearly 10 seconds, while India came 2nd in both discus and shot putt. Mathew Webb was our only competitor in the junior boys’ competition and put in strong performances in the 800m and 1500m. The senior boys is the one category where we try to compete in the team competition, and despite having a small squad, we very nearly won. We ended up coming 2nd out of 4 schools, narrowly beaten by the hosts Gresham’s, who had a much larger squad. This is our best result in this fixture for many years and was due not only to some excellent individual performances, but also due to the willingness of the boys to have a go at everything. The spirit of the team was epitomised by Tom Swinley who competed in 5 events. Tom started the day by dominating his specialist event, the discus, with a throw of over 33m. Tom then also picked up valuable points in the shot putt, 200m and javelin, before finishing with a leg in the relay. Tom Rackham and Oliver Cooley also had a busy afternoon, both competing in four events. Harry Adams and Angus Darrah came 2nd in the hurdles and shot putt respectfully. Christian Hansen and Jack Muchlinski were 2nd and 3rd in the 400m, while Jonny Jones and Tom Rackham were 2nd and 4th in the 800m. We came away with 4 individual victories. As well as Tom Swinley in the discus, Harry Adams won the long jump with 5m73, Oli Cooley won the triple jump with 11m76, and Martainn Ramsay and Tom Gosling rounded off the day with yet another 1-2 in the 1500m.
