Cup Run
23 March 2012
.jpg)
This year’s Cup Run was completed under glorious blue skies and bright sunshine. It gave a festival feel to this traditional day in the school calendar. The logistics of moving the whole school to Mousehold is always a massive undertaking and would not be possible without the co-operation of the pupils and staff. The fine weather and underfoot conditions aided four competitors to set record times. Matthew Webb and Lorna Magrath both improved on their third place finishes of last year to win the Junior boys’ and Intermediate girls’ races respectively in record times. Both finished well ahead of their nearest rivals. Magnus Chapman also turned a third place finish last year into a narrow one second victory over Jonathan Slater. Esther Anderson improved on the Junior girls’ time in only its second running.
Lucy Temple, last year’s Senior girls’ winner, bettered her time for last year but could not prevent Tania Pendreich from smashing the record and winning by nearly a minute. Martainn Ramsay, despite missing out on a record for the third successive year by 1 second, still managed to beat his nearest rival Cameron Toms by fifty five seconds.
The victors could only wait and watch to see if their efforts could bring home the coveted team trophies. Unfortunately none of the winners ended up as respective team race winners but Lorna Magrath did see her efforts rewarded as Valpy claimed the prestigious overall winners’ shield.
My congratulations to all the competitors especially to Mr Peters competing in his first Cup Run. Mr. Asthton and Mrs Newstead were the best placed staff and will hope to better their times next year.
My thanks to all the staff who contributed to such a well-run day especially, clerk of the course, Mr Gardiner and to Mr Hill for his IT skills and time.
