A regional win for Jack Womack and Osian Evans-Sham.
Jack and Osian won the regional round of the International Competition for Young Debaters (ICYD) on Saturday 3 March. The round was held at the Cambridge Unions; three debates were held, then the announcement was made as to who would break to the final. It is always a nerve-wracking moment, but lo and behold, Osian and Jack had won a place at the regional final. They took their places at the dispatch box in the Union and fought off a very good Haileybury School team to secure an overall win, with Jack Womack being declared overall the best speaker of the round (Osian was second). Congratulations to both Osian and Jack. This was a tremendous achievement and not one we have had before. Our novice team of Ben Crane and Jonny Singh came 10th out of 29 schools, with Ben ranked 6th and Jonny ranked 11th overall out of 58 speakers. These are really good results from debaters in their first competitive debate. Congratulations to them and to Crawford Jamieson and Alex Lipp who have coached and prepared the junior debaters this year. All their efforts paid off. We look forward to Osian and Jack putting up a great performance at the national final on Saturday 5 May.
