Classics Department Drama Event 2012

21 February 2012

Many congratulations to those pupils in Middle 5 and Lower 5 who took part in the Classics Department's annual Drama Event in Blake Studio 2 on Wednesday 8 February. The performances covered a range of Classical genres, from tragedy and comedy and epic to epigrams. The Middle 5 contributed two retellings of Odysseus's encounter with the witch-goddess Circe; an illustrated reading of a selection of Martial epigrams, with some very effective and affecting tableaux; and two performances of Aesop's fable 'The Frogs and their Ruler', the second in English for those members of the audience not fluent in Classical Greek. The Lower 5 gave us a modern-day updating of the Greek tragedy Hippolytus, complete with chorus; and three Greek myths as reimagined by Ovid and Ted Hughes: Echo and Narcissus, Arachne and Midas. These featured some confident acting and effective use of simple props and scenery. The audience watched closely and listened carefully and are to be congratulated on that.

My thanks to Miss Boyt, Miss Bruce, Mr Griffiths and Mrs Ward for their help in preparing these short scenes, and to Mr James and the Drama Department for welcoming us to BS2.
