Junior Debating News

28 November 2011

25 November 2011
Jonny Singh was declared best speaker in the debate on the motion of making it compulsory to have 50% women on the board of businesses. He and Jack Vavasour tried to justify a line or argument that women did not have the same rights as men, a point rebutted by Benedict Smith of U4 who put forward the more persuasive argument that women's rights would be undone by this form of positive discrimination. It would constitute a cheat's victory. This point found favour with the floor, who voted against the motion so that it was defeated.

Well done to all the speakers, to Ben Crane for chairing, and to Alex Lipp, James Medler and Danny Bate for judging.

Next Friday's Junior Debate: "This House would reinstate the death penalty".

18 November 2011
Junior Debaters tackled the challenging motion: "This House would assassinate dictators". Ben Crane spoke in proposition, but was outmanoeuvred by the opposition team of Jack Womack and Rory Cruickshank. The floor vote was 1 vote for prop, 2 votes for opp and 3 abstentions, so the motion was defeated.

Jack Womack was declared best speaker overall.

Well done to all and thank you to Jonny Singh for chairing and Danny Bate for judging.
