Daily Mail Cup - 2nd round

10 November 2011

Daily Mail Cup – 2nd round

1st XV v Wymondham College – Won 18-13

The 1st XV travelled to Wymondham for their Daily Mail clash and after a disappointing defeat at the weekend, we needed to start strongly.  We most definitely did, scoring a try within the first minute of play.  Wymondham tried to run the ball back from the kick off and were met by an organised line of defence; George Salter making a massive tackle causing their player into an off-load that Will Catchpole intercepted and, still with some work to do, ran in the try from about 20m out with James Nolan converting.  We continued to apply pressure on Wymondham and after some clever play off the back of the scrum by Ben Place and Lewis Hall, TJ Ighomereho went over the line in the corner for a 12 point lead.  As expected in cup games like these, the opposition responded and before half time had scored 13 points of their own.  Half time score 13-12 to Wymondham.  Buoyed by our first half performance, we knew that if we could limit mistakes, the game was ours for the taking.  Defence was the key in the second half; the midfield held strong, giving them nothing and some strong fielding of the ball by the back three made sure our line was safe.  By this stage Wymondham were really starting to feel the pressure at the contact area and especially the scrum, where we had been dominant all day against a heavier pack.  Lewis Hall was constantly kicking over Wymondham’s defensive line, turning them around and making them play from deep in their half.  This constant pressure and strong defence gave James Nolan two chances to kick for points which he gladly took, getting us back in the lead by five points.  Although we missed a few clear cut chances to score, the game was definitely shifting our way.  Final score 18-13 to Norwich.

Within this special performance, the forwards must get a mention for the way they dominated the game at the scrum and contact area and the back line for their defensive organisation and trust in each other.

Iron man: Harry Adams for his superb defence

Player of the day: Lewis Hall

In this match, two players reached the 20 cap mark and were awarded ties in recognition of their achievement: Lewis Hall and George Salter.
