Debating News

19 July 2011

8 Junior debaters took part in a model Debate today at UEA in the Council Chamber for the benefit of the Aramco Summer School.

UEA had contacted the school to ask if we could provide an simple introduction to debating to a group of young Saudis who are attending a summer school at UEA before starting their undergraduate studies at UK universities.

Mrs Saywack explained the principles of British Parliamentary Style debating and then our L6 pupils debated the motion 'This House would hold the developed countries responsible for Climate Change' and the Saudis could see how arguments could be prepared and rebutted. The debate was chaired by Mrs Saywack.

Following the debate, the floor voted on the question the motion was passed by 30 votes to 18. The Saudis were then asked to discuss the debate they saw and to analyse the techniques they saw used. This is in preparation for a debate they will participate in tat the end of the week at UEA.
