Public Speaking News
23 June 2011
Last Thursday, the intermediate team for 'Youth Speaks' (Rory Cruickshank, Robert Ekbery and Jack Vavsour) and Zachary Friend of the senior team, gave a presentation to the Rotary Club at The George Hotel on Newmarket Road of their experiences of three rounds of the 'Youth Speaks' competition which is organised by the Rotary Club. After a delicious meal, the intermediate team gave winning accounts of their experience of the Norwich, Bury St. Edmunds and Haileybury rounds of this competition. They spoke about the preparation they did, their nerves, their determination to do well and their disappointment when they did not progress to the finals. They want to have a go again next year! Zachary Friend then spoke of his five-year involvement with this competition, and of how he had been in teams which were first in the Norwich round but unable to progress to the next stage because of the commitments of the other speakers. Finally, in his last year at Norwich School before he emigrates to Australia, Zachary had his chance to see if his team could make it to the national finals. His team (consisting of Nicholas Parry and Eve Smith, beside Zachary, both of whom could not be at the event last Thursday) made it through to Haileybury, as the intermediates did, a most unexpected event to have two teams competing for a place in the nationals. Sadly, they did not make it through either. However, both Zachary and Rory Cruickshank gained 'Best Chairman' awards which compensated a little! The Rotarians had a lot of searching questions to ask the pupils, and the evening was enjoyable. Norwich School presented Janis and Michael Woodrow with chocolates, wine and flowers for all their hard work in organising the Norwich round of 'Youth Speaks' and for all their support of the Norwich Schools over many years; they are now retiring from running this competition. Thank you, Janis and Michael, for being there for us as sympathetic supporters and great organisers. Thank you to the pupils for giving up their evening to tell the Rotarians of their experiences, but it was the least any of us could do for all that they have done for us. And a huge thank you to Zachary Friend who has pushed public speaking as a competitive activity this year, taking Norwich School teams to their best level ever in a major competition.
