Rowing News
11 June 2011
On Saturday six crews from the Boat Club raced at the Star Regatta, held in Bedford, over a 1200 metre course.
The Under 14 Boys' crew continued to show potential but were missing a couple of key crew members on the day and were beaten by Oundle.
The Under 14 Girls' crew sculled with determination, having gone behind in their first race, to overhaul and beat a local Bedford crew but were knocked out in the semi-finals of their competition.
The Under 15 Girls' crew rowed with enthusiasm but were unsuccesful against strong opposition.
The Under 16 double scull was a trial crew who sculled well after a couple of training sessions in a borrowed boat, but were not able to beat established crews from Bedford and Norwich Rowing Club.
The Under 15 Boys' crews, both finalists at National Schools, raced in their fours and then doubled up to race in an eight. The Under 15 eight, after a handful of training sessions, beat Bedford School, a first win in this boat category, and rowed well but unsuccessfully in the final of that competition against a strong Eton crew.
However, the Under 15A crew of Alex Turner, Max Ovenden, Nick Siemons, Jonathan Whadcoat and Marcus Bell raced the Eton squad in the fours competition. This time the Under 15s beat Eton A and B decisively with some of their best rowing of the season.
The Under 18 crew of Tom Coles, Alex Watts, Hal Bedford-Payne, Tom Klinge and Charlie Cullen raced with good technique and style in two competitions, beacing first the University of Kent and then Bedford School.
