Senior & Intermediate teams second at "Youth Speaks" regional round

2 April 2011

Having won both the local and district rounds of the Rotary Club's "Youth Speaks" public speaking competition, our senior and intermediate teams competed at Haileybury School in the regional final on Saturday 2nd April. This round determined the region's entry to the national finals.

Despite very good performances, both our teams came second in their categories, with the Chairperson of each team winning the prize for Best Chair in his category. Congratulations to Zac Friend and Rory Cruickshank for winning those prizes, and to their team mates Eve Smith and Nick Parry, Jack Vavasour and Robert Ekbery. Well done to all of you: I am very proud of you for getting so far. It is most unusual for two teams from the same school to go forward in tandem as you have.

It was interesting to see Haileybury School (formed to educate the sons of those running the East India Company) and to eat in its dining hall, the acoustics of which were used in the Harry Potter films. I also met Mr Peter Blair, Master-in-Charge of Debating at Haileybury, who would like us to work together in organising pre-season debating training, a plan that is under discussion at the moment.

A heartfelt "thank you" is due to Zachary Friend from myself, as he has been instrumental in motivating both teams and pushing them on to the regional round, the first time Norwich School has been represented in this competition at this level.
