Director of Music's career is celebrated

11 March 2010

At St Andrew's Hall the auditorium was packed with music lovers and the stage was crowded with performers. All had come to celebrate the achievements of Colin Dowdeswell over nearly three decades as director of music at Norwich School and conductor of its Choral Society.

Its policy is to bring pupils and adults together to sing major works with support from the Gateway Players. This instrumental ensemble has been founded on the same principle of combining youth with experience. For this occasion, many old members returned to swell the ranks.

The line up of soloists, all with local connections, was first rate. James Rutherford was a deeply impressive bass, and Joshua Ellicott's tenor was pure gold. Ruth Peel (alto) and Fiona Hammacott (soprano) completed a fine quartet.

With festive grandeur Handel's coronation anthem Zadok the Priest opened a programme that ended equally triumphantly with Parry's soaring I Was Glad.

Mozart's Requiem explored a wider variety of moods. The more dramatic movements were full of power, and the different parts of the choir seized their chances to show individuality in energetic fugal passages.

This was a concert that was enjoyed by all, and Colin Dowdeswell will be able to look back on it with satisfaction.
