Cranmer Awards National Finals

2 March 2010

Two pupils from Norwich School took part in the National Finals of the Prayer Book Society’s Cranmer Awards on Thursday 25th February. Last November, Gabriella Masding L5B won the Junior section of the Regional Heats and Jonathan Wilde the Senior section. Both have worked extremely hard since to memorise lengthy (three to five minute) passages from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer and to perfect their reading of them. Having won the regional heats judged by Anne Robinson, they faced judges at the National Finals headed by Lord Hurd of Westwell, Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary under Margaret Thatcher and John Major. Both Gabriella and Jonathan performed extremely well against very strong opposition. Jonathan, who was competing in his third National Final, was Highly Commended for his reading. The Finals were covered by the BBC Radio 4 “Sunday” programme, in a report which included two interviews with Jonathan (the report can be heard online at http://www.pbs.org.uk/downloads/BBC2010cranmer.mp3).
