Government League Tables
13 January 2010
Comment from the Head Master:
Unfortunately, the official Government statistics for schools, published every January, generate the least helpful and most misleading of such league tables - particularly for academic, independent schools. International GCSEs are disregarded, so all Norwich School pupils appear to have failed mathematics and dual award science. The School gets a 0% rating for the proportion of pupils gaining 5 A*-C grades, while the correct figure is 100%.
Furthermore, the 'average points per pupil' measure which is used for GCSE and Advanced Level is also misleading in that scores are raised significantly by non-academic qualifications, by general studies examinations and by multiple entries. Schools that have a policy of entering pupils for general studies, for accessible non-academic qualifications and for numerous examinations will often appear further up the list than those that deliberately limit entries to a few of the harder academic subjects.
The unofficial league tables produced by newspapers at the end of August provide a meaningful rank order according to the proportion of top grades achieved. IGCSE is included and general studies and non-academic subjects tend to be excluded. Measured by the A/B grade percentage at A level, Norwich School has been the highest achieving school in Norfolk and Suffolk for the last four years.
